In many ways it is more difficult to design bikes for entry-level riders than it is for the higher end, riders in this category you want a bike that functions well and isn’t sold on advertising gimmicks that provide little if any on-road benefits. It is for this reason that a lot of time was spent in the lab, working out how to provide a bike that is stiff and responsive, yet at the same time provides excellent value for money.
With the Strattos S4, Polygon has reached a critical balance point — trading weight with durability, speed with comfort, and performance with reliability. The overall package is indeed a category killer.
The ALX All-Round frame doesn’t require an aggressive posture like pure racing bikes, and is instead a slightly more upright comfortable ride — these frames usually termed “endurance frames” are designed for riders doing rides like Bay in a Day or Sydney to the Gong. It’s during these rides that the frame also delivers with predictable handling. Often competitor road bikes in this category are based on race frames, which can feel quite twitchy especially during descents, where the Strattos remains composed and sure-footed.
Those using the bike as a commuter will also appreciate the handling characteristics, and Polygon has backed up its commuter credentials by adding rack mounts to the frame for panniers and luggage.
The fact that the cables are internally routed, further adds to the look of the bike.
On the front end of the frame, Polygon has fitted an ACX All-Round fork. This fork not only reduces the overall bike weight but most importantly dampens road vibrations, causing less fatigue to your body and keeping you fresh – mentally and physically. For this new version of the bike, the fork also includes a carbon steerer as opposed to the alloy which was on the previous version of this bike.
The drivetrain is powered by Shimano. The Shimano Tiagra RD-4700-SS Direct Attach is the first in the line-up of Shimano’s dedicated road groupsets. Clean crisp shifts are combined with a range of gears almost identical to the higher-end groupsets.
The crankset and bottom bracket on the Polygon Strattos have also been carefully chosen with efficiency and lightweight in mind. This is an often overlooked part of the bike, yet it is through here that all the power is transferred through the frame.
Instead of using a heavier and cheaper sealed bottom bracket and crankset seen so often on entry-level bikes. Polygon has specified a Shimano BSA Threaded for a 2-piece bottom bracket and crankset which shaves precious weight from the bike and stiffens up the bottom bracket, improving performance. You will usually only find similar technology on bikes twice or three times more expensive.
All of these features mean that this bike will outperform the competition and more importantly your expectations.
